Missoula’s Maggie Crippen captures Women’s State Am title

Posted: Updated:

For the second time in five years, Maggie Crippen won the Women’s State Am golf tournament in Helena. The Missoula native and North Dakota State golfer led from start to finish at Green Meadow Country Club, and captured a seven stroke victory on Thursday.

“It feels really good,” Crippen said after turning in her scorecard Thursday. “There are a lot of really good college players in it this year. Dorsey (Addicks) just waxed the field last year so it feels good to kind of get her back and win this one.”

Crippen, who won three Class B individual state championships at Missoula Loyola, held a seven shot advantage entering Thursday’s final round. Back-to-back bogeys on the first two holes trimmed that lead to five before Crippen dialed in.

After shooting par on the third, fourth and fifth holes, Crippen dropped her first birdie of the round on the Par 4 6th. A great approach shot over the water left her with mere feet on the putt.

Crippen ended the tournament with a birdie on 18, receiving a loud applause from golfers and fans gathered around the green.

“The greens are really tough but I’ve always been a really good putter,” she said. “I work really hard at my putting. I three-putted twice the first day and then didn’t have a three-putt the rest of the tournament. I made a lot of clutch putts today. I think that’s why I did really well.”

Crippen enters her senior season at North Dakota State in August. She was named a WGCA all-American scholar and was honored in the Summit League winter and spring academic honor rolls. She also earned a spot on the Summit League commissioner’s list of academic excellence.

In 2011, Crippen fired a three-day total of 227 at Helena’s Bill Roberts Golf Course. She is also a two-time Montana Junior Am titlist in 2011 and 2012.

“Last time we stayed here we stayed with a family friend and this time we stayed with a family friend. It’s kind of like a relaxing vacation,” Crippen said. “You get to see everyone you don’t normally see. It’s comfortable I guess. This year I knew we were going into Helena so I kind of felt like I had to win it this year sort of thing.”

Crippen joked about her boyfriend, Ryan Porch, who won the Men’s State Am a week ago, saying they may be the first couple in Montana history to capture the prestigious titles in the same year.

“It was really fun,” she said. “He was really supportive. I went down and watched him finish. I don’t know if it’s ever happened before. No one keeps track of that sort of thing. We have a dinner date tomorrow night to talk about it. I think he won by nine and I think I won by seven. We play from different tees.”

Mary Bryson captured the Women’s Senior Am.
