HELENA -

While the goats roam free on the family ranch, Ty Everson and his horse, Drummer, are running practice rounds inside the arena.

"Having a place in my backyard, it's pretty easy to walk out, saddle a horse and ride. Compare that to getting your horse caught, go to an arena - getting him loaded and go somewhere down the road. And then have someone help you out running chutes or whatever. It's hard to get everyone there. You can just show up at home and go out to practice. It's nice."

Ty and Drummer have teamed up to become one of the top steer wrestling combos on the Montana high school circuit. But bulldogging, as it's known, wasn't always the main event.

"I think a lot of it is trial and error. I grew up riding steers and I rode mini bulls. I rode high school bulls for a little while and I started getting away from that. I had always been roping and riding horses too, so I started getting more serious about calf roping and team roping. My sophomore year I was getting pretty interested in steer wrestling. It just kind of clicked with me. I liked it a lot. It gave me that adrenaline rush."

Hours of reps and knowledge from the likes of Beau Clark, Ty Erickson and Garrett Hanson, have young Ty Everson on his way to his first national high school finals.

"I know it's a big rodeo. There will be a lot of good guys down there - the best from every state and some from out of the state. It's going to be a good test but I think I can compete with those guys and I think I have the tools to go down there and compete. I'm looking forward to that."

Everson, who will be 19 when nationals kicks off, is headed to Douglas, Arizona and Cochise College. "It's warm year-round and a chance to practice nearly every day," according to Ty. Every practice round, every steer wrestled down - it's all a part of his overall plan.

"I plan to pro rodeo after college. I'm going to get through college and hopefully make the CNFR and rodeo in college a bunch. Then maybe try to get on the pro circuit and rodeo there."

Watch out Ty Erickson. Ty Everson may be Helena's next big thing in the world of bulldogging.
