#Spur4Chris: Tyrell Smith riding to help friend fight cancer

Posted: Updated:

The CMR Stampede hits Stanford on Friday and while most cowboys will be competing for checks, one bronc rider will saddle up for a cause.

Geyser’s Tyrell Smith is donating a portion of his winnings this season to childhood friend and fellow rough stock rider Chris Johnson of Iowa, who is undergoing chemotherapy treatments for stage three testicular cancer.

Smith is dedicating his rides to his friend and uses the hashtag #Spur4Chris on his social media posts. He’s hoping his example will inspire others in the rodeo community to pitch in for one of their own.

“It puts things in perspective,” Smith said. “I’m still fortunate that I get to ride bucking horses when this young kid who has his whole life ahead of him is fighting just to be able to have a chance again.”

Smith has had plenty of opportunity to use #Spur4Chris online.

He’s currently ranked 24th in the PRCA Saddle Bronc standings, with $22,327.20 earned including wins in Belt and several other circuit stops.

“By doing my job now with any hope there might be someone out East or people all over the state or all over the country that pick up on it and we’ll have more than enough support for this young man.”

If you’d like to help Chris Johnson fight against cancer visit the family’s GoFundMe page.

The CMR Stampede is set for Sunday at 1:30pm in Stanford. Tyrell and his wife Jannelle Smith will both be competing.
