New MSU athletic director Leon Costello visits fans and donors in Great Falls

GREAT FALLS -

In just his second full day on the job, it’s safe to say Montana State’s new athletic director Leon Costello has hit the ground running. He flew in to Bozeman Wednesday morning and met with coaches and staff, then hit the road to visit Bobcat nation.

Thursday night, Costello made an appearance at a private residence in Great Falls to meet with Cat fans and donors and to lay out his vision for MSU athletics, stressing the importance of building relationships.

Just getting to know as many people as I can, that includes staff, donors, fans, campus and community members,” Costello said. “That’s part of what makes an athletic department go, it’s what makes a campus go. So that’s a lot of what I’m doing here in the first couple weeks and months is really getting to know people, getting the pulse of the place. Really what makes people tick and why they’re so passionate about being Bobcats.”

Costello said the generosity from Bobcat nation has left him speechless at times.

“It’s amazing the people that come up to you and are just willing to help you  whether it’s in the move or just getting situated,” Costello said. “To go somewhere and have that level of support means a lot to us and is one of the reasons why we came here. When you look at the leadership on campus and look at some of the leadership around the state with some of the Bobcat Club members and all the different clubs that we have, it makes it really easy to get up and go to work every day.”

Costello visited Bozeman when South Dakota State faced the Bobcats for the FCS football playoffs in 2014. But Thursday marked his first visit to Great Falls. The first stop on what he hopes are many throughout the state.

“I’m looking forward to really getting out to all parts of the state,” said Costello. “I know we have alums that are everywhere and even outside of the state. But it’s fun to get to know the lay of the land and also find some hotspots to go for vacation! I’m really looking forward to getting to know people and learn what they do. That’s one of the best parts of the job.”

Montana State fans will have a chance to meet Costello at the annual Bobcat Golf Scramble, 8:30am at Eagle Falls.
