Voyagers release opening day roster

Posted: Updated:

Great Falls, MT-The Chicago White Sox have announced the 2016 opening day roster for the Great Falls Voyagers. The Voyagers season starts Friday night on the road, with a four-game series at Helena before closing out the first road trip with a two-game set at Missoula.

The Voyagers roster features seven players (five position players, two pitchers) who suited up for Great Falls at some point last season, including the White Sox 10th rated prospect in Corey Zangari. Zangari played in six games for the Voyagers in 2015. The 19-year-old Oklahoma native was a 6th round draft pick last year.

Jake Jarvis returns to Great Falls after appearing in 45 games with the Voyagers last season. Jarvis was a 10th round selection in the 2014 draft out of Klein Collins High School in Texas. Frank Califano suited up in 53 games for the Voyagers last season and hit .291 with 19 RBIs. Jackson Glines is back in Great Falls for a second consecutive season. Glines was selected in the 10th round of the 2015 draft from the University of Michigan and played in 45 games last year. Former 8th round draft pick Casey Schroeder is one of three catchers on the Voyagers roster. Schroeder played in 40 games for Great Falls in 2015.

The two returning hurlers are Ryan Hinchley and Brandon Magallones. The left-handed Hinchley was drafted by the White Sox in the 9th round out of Illinois-Chicago in 2015. He had 21 relief appearances for Great Falls last season, and struck out 32 batters in 26.1 innings. Magallones was mostly a starter for the Voyagers in 2015 after being drafted in the 24th round out of Northwestern (IL). The right-hander went 3-2 with a 4.35 ERA in nine appearances with six starts.

The Voyagers roster also features 13 draft picks from the first-year MLB player draft last week. Those include 3rd round selection Alex Call out of Ball State, 4th round pick Jameson Fisher from Southeastern Louisiana State, and 8th round draft choice Nathan Nolan of St. Mary’s College (CA). Call and Fisher are listed as outfielders, while Nolan is a catcher.

The Voyagers start the season with 15 pitchers, three catchers, six infielders and five outfielders. All told, Great Falls players represent 16 different states and three countries. There are eight from California, four from Texas, and three out of Illinois. Two Voyagers hail from the South American country of Colombia, with one from the Dominican Republic.

Great Falls welcomes a new coaching staff for 2016. Veteran manager Tommy Thompson was at the helm for Kannapolis last season. Thompson is joined by first-year hitting coach Willie Harris and first-year pitching coach Matt Zaleski. Goldy Simmons will serve as the team’s strength coach, while Margaret Rall is back for her third season in Great Falls as the athletic trainer.

The Voyagers open the season Friday night at Helena. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The home opener at Centene Stadium is set for June 23rd against Helena. Opening night in Great Falls will feature a fireworks show following the game. In addition, Howard’s Pizza presents the magnet schedule giveaway and Ace Hardware brings you the wooden nickel giveaway. And, Sip ‘N Dip Lounge sponsors the first Thirsty Thursday of the season.
