Field prep is a round-the-clock job for Brewers groundskeeper

Posted: Updated:

Buy your tickets, get a hot dog, maybe a hamburger and find your seats. These are the typical steps a baseball fan takes when going to a game. But how many actually take a second to appreciate the field itself? Keith Fandel sure does.

The groundskeeper at Kindrick Legion Field says his job is far from simple.

“A typical day usually starts the night before. We’ll nail drag, we’ll drag, add water to the infield skin, we’ll run the irrigation,” Fandel said. “Then get ready for a game!”

For those with a vested interest in the condition of the field, Kindrick Legion is a representation of the entire organization.

"You want what you have to look good,” said Helena Brewers general manager Paul Fetz. “Just like at your house, you want a lawn that looks good. It says that much more about you and that much more about the staff and saying that we are doing our job to maintain this ballpark."

With legion ball starting a bit earlier than the Brewers season, the grounds crew is able to get a jump on the work.

"I treat the field the same for the American Legion Baseball Program as I would the Brewers,” said Fandel. “So just getting the field in as good of playing condition as I can for the Legion teams makes it an easy transition for the Brewers."

And they do so with the fans in mind.

"I think its about aesthetics,” said Fetz. “Fans like to come to a field that looks appealing!"

But field care goes well beyond just pleasing the eyes of the fans.

"The minor leaguers even the major leaguers, they expect uniformity,” said Fandel. “They want the ball to play the same every game. Consistent hops, especially at third and first."

The field looks great and spirits are high as we inch closer and closer to the start of the season.

"I’m loving it! And we're getting excited about opening day and all the fun stuff we are going to be doing with our players as well as with our fans and the community as well."
