All-Star game marks final 6-man contest for DGS coach Scott Sparks

Posted: Updated:

In 14 years at Denton, Scott Sparks has seen unprecedented success in the small farming community. Sparks coached teams made five state title appearances, winning two 6-man titles with the Trojans (2010, 2011) and one with the Denton-Geyser-Stanford co-op (2015).

"We were able to play in five championships and win a lot of games," Sparks said. "Six man has been a really enjoyable experience and I'm glad I got to be a part of it."

An increase in enrollment will force the DGS co-op to make the jump to the eight man football ranks this fall, but Sparks will not be joining the Bearcats. After years of making the 80-mile round trip from his home in Lewistown, Sparks has opted to step away from the program to help run his family business and to free up time to watch his kids play sports. So Saturday's all star game in Highwood marks his final time on the sidelines at the six man level as coach of the Red Team.

"I will miss six man football. You go and watch an eleven man game and it doesn't look right because there's too many people on the field," Sparks said with a laugh. "It's been a great ride. I'm just glad I can be a part of this all star game and represent Denton, Stanford and Geyser one final time this week."

Coaches and players agree Sparks has had a huge impact on six man football in Montana.

"He's been there and done that," said Savage coach James Kessel who's in charge of the Blue Team. "I'm new to this game and just to watch him last year when we played him I learned a lot and I'm stealing some stuff from him."

"I could call it an honor to play under coach Sparks," said Red Team wide receiver Jackson Nagy of Sunburst. "He coaches much more than football."

Sparks doesn't rule out returning to the prep football sidelines in the future, but for now he's just enjoying the experience of one final outing at the six man level.

"It's a busy weekend with some baseball," said Sparks who also coaches the Lewistown Redbirds legion team. "But I told myself if I got the opportunity I was definitely going to do it. it's hectic and busy but I really appreciate they were able to work with me so I could be a part of this one more time."

The Six Man All Star Game kicks off in Highwood, Saturday at 7pm.
