Republican Gianforte puts another $150K into gov campaign

Greg Gianforte Greg Gianforte

Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Gianforte put another $150,000 of his own money into his campaign this month, bringing his personal total to nearly $436,000, or almost a third of his campaign funding.

Gianforte, the Bozeman co-founder of a software firm purchased by Oracle Corp. for $1.8 billion four years ago, has now raised more than $1.52 million to finance his challenge of Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock.

Bullock, however, reported Monday that his campaign fundraising total has reached $1.8 million – and that his account balance is about three-and-a-half times more than Gianforte’s, as of last week.

The Bullock campaign has $1.26 million in its accounts, compared to $375,000 for Gianforte.

“We are so grateful for the overwhelming support from Montanans in every corner of the state,” Bullock’s campaign manager, Eric Hyers, said in a statement. “As Greg Gianforte continues to dump hundreds of thousands of dollars of his personal fortune to try to buy the governor’s office, thousands of Montanans are pitching in to re-elect Steve.”

A spokesman for the Gianforte campaign said Gianforte is going up against "a big-government opponent" financed by PAC and other dollars.

"It's important that Montanans have a governor who doesn't take all of his cues from the special interests controlling Helena and Washington, D.C.," said Aaron Flint. "This (report) clearly shows Greg has strong momentum, especially after out-raising the incumbent last reporting period."

Gianforte reported Monday that he loaned his campaign $150,000 during the first two weeks of May. He earlier made a $200,000 personal contribution to the campaign and has personally paid for $85,700 of his campaign expenses, listed as “in-kind” donations.

He has raised nearly $1.1 million from individual donors since entering the race last summer, including $101,000 the past three weeks. Gianforte is declining donations from political-action committees. His campaign has spent about $1 million through last week.

Bullock raised about $111,000 the past three weeks, including money from individuals and PACs. His total contributions for the campaign included 4 percent from PACs and the rest from individuals.
