The Lewis & Clark County Commission has designated April 2016 as "Alcohol Awareness Month" in the Helena area.
The proclamation cites several facts about the risks of underage drinking.
According to the proclamation, kids who drink are more likely to be victims of violent crime and be involved in alcohol-related crashes.
Sergeant Jay Nelson of the Montana Highway Patrol urges parents to talk with their children about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
As an MHP trooper and the son of Lewis & Clark County coroner Mickey Nelson, he's seen how alcohol can lead to tragedy.
Nelson said, “Understanding the devastation with alcohol and the devastation when alcohol-related crashes, that not only affects that person but all those people that support that person."
By signing the proclamation, Lewis & Clark County now joins the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Incorporated in the fight against alcohol use and abuse.
