"Jaywalking elk" prompt safety reminder from MHP (video)

Posted: Updated:

The Montana Highway Patrol recently shared this video on Facebook.

The post explains:

Trooper Doug Samuelson recently came across a herd of jaywalking elk on Hwy 12 East of Helena. Wonder of wonders, they weren't crossing at a designated wildlife crossing sign! What should you do if an animal runs in front of your vehicle?

1) always drive alert, sober and buckled up.
2) Constantly scan the road and shoulders in front of you
3) although animals can cross your path at any time, they are typically more active at dusk and dawn.
4) if safe to do so and there is no traffic ahead of you, use your high beams to better see.
5) slow down in areas with lots of wildlife activity
6) if a collision is unavoidable, brake firmly and stay in your lane.
