Montana Summit on Early Childhood Education held in Helena

Posted: Updated:
HELENA -- The final day of the Montana Summit on Early Childhood Education discussed the benefits of investing in statewide preschool.

Business leaders, educators, and law enforcement officials listened to advocates of the idea talk about high-quality programs.

According to Child Care Aware America, Montana would save nearly 35 million dollars in K-12 costs if early childhood education was implemented for children under 200 percent of the poverty level.

Data also suggests pre-k instruction helps a child's cognitive and social development.

About 80 percent of male inmates and nearly 75 percent of female inmates at Montana State Prisons are high school dropouts.

Those in law enforcement say early childhood education is the key to decreasing that percentage and establishing productive lives for Montana's youth.
