Cattle prices helping Montana agriculture industry

Posted: Updated:
HELENA - Agriculture leaders from across Montana say cattle prices are helping the industry in the face of low crop prices.

Lower corn prices are pulling down other crop prices - and spring and winter wheat prices are forecast to be lower.

But on the bright side, demand for Montana cattle continues to be high with prices looking to stay strong.

"Corn prices are lower so feedlots down in the mid-west are rebuilding their herds and so they want to get new cattle from Montana," explained Dr. Anton Bekkerman with Montana State University.

"They're will to pay higher prices for cattle in Montana and that means that cattle prices are going to stay high. So if you're in cattle you're going to have another bright year," he added.

International demand for lentils and peas remains high with chance that Montana could become a major post-production area for those commodities.
