BILLINGS -- During a press conference Friday night, Billings Police Chief Rich St. John described the events of a shooting as they unfolded at the Billings clinic earlier that day.

The U.S. Marshal Task Force, which is made up of police, county deputies, and US Marshals, followed a wanted and violent offender into the hospital.

Six officers attempted to apprehend the suspect.

The man tried to run and officers said he appeared to be trying to pull something out of the waistband of his pants.

The suspect then fell and, as he fell, a gun discharged, hit the clinic, and went through a window.

As he was on the ground, he made attempts to clear the gun. That's when the task force moved in and all six officers fired at the man.

(January 30, 2015, 8:30pm) Police have confirmed that the man who shot at police Friday afternoon near the entrance at the Billings Clinic hospital has died.

The man's name has not yet been released.

The incident happened over near the entrance of Billings Clinic to the maternity and pediatric departments on 10th Avenue North, near the north side of the hospital.

Billings Police officers and detectives along with the U.S. Marshal agents are investigating.

Lt. Mark Cady said the Task Force spotted a wanted man outside of the hospital around 3 p.m. on Friday.

Officers approached the man and Cady said the man did not comply with their commands.

"They confronted him and asked him to surrender," Cady said. "At that time it appears he pulled out a weapon and gunfire was exchanged with several officers. The suspect was hit by at least one shot from one of the officers' handguns. And none of the officers were wounded."
