Wolf Point man dies in rollover near Custer, 2 others injured

A Wolf Point man killed in a rollover crash on Tuesday night has been identified as Kevor Martell.

Martell, 21, died of injuries sustained in the accident on Interstate 94 near Custer.

Two other men from Wolf Point were injured in the crash.

The Montana Highway Patrol said the accident occurred at approximately 11:55 p.m. on Tuesday when the driver, Justino (Justin) Hernandez, 22, asked his front seat passenger, Martell, to take control of the steering wheel while he entered phone numbers into his mobile device.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, at mile marker 43 the car swerved into the median of the westbound lanes. When Hernandez tried to regain control, the vehicle rolled.

MHP Trooper Toman Baukema said Hernandez and Martell were ejected from the vehicle.

Martell died on scene.

A passenger in the back seat of the car, Alexander Barr, 21, was not ejected and was the only person wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Trooper Baukema said he sustained potentially life-threatening injuries.

Hernandez and Barr were both transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Billings.

Hernandez is listed in fair condition, while Barr is listed in critical condition.

Trooper Baukema said the crash is still being investigated, and it is not yet known if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
