The search and rescue mission launched on Saturday ended in tragedy when two men were found dead and another seriously injured.
The men apparently drove off a 25 to 30 foot cliff and landed upside down in the Flathead River, just seven miles southwest of Polson.
The Montana Highway Patrol reports that the three men from Montana, ages 20, 23, and 24, were partying near Buffalo Bridge Road.
The driver who survived the accident was flown by helicopter to Kalispell Regional Medical Center. He told MHP that it was dark when they crashed.
Troopers say there was a party going on in the area, and that is where the men were coming from. A person came across the crash at around 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and called for help.
The driver said he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident and while the MHP is still investigating the incident, they say alcohol was involved.
(April 9, 2010) Lake County dispatchers report that a search and rescue effort is underway near Buffalo Bridge on the Flathead River, southwest of Flathead Lake.
We spoke with Lake County Sheriff Lucky Larson, who was unable to give us details at this time because he says crews and deputies were still "at the scene".
We do know that Lake County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue teams responded to the area sometime between 11:30 and 12:00 on Saturday afternoon.
Larson says he does not know what time the call requesting Search and Rescue teams to respond on the scene was sent in.
