The Academy Awards were handed out in Hollywood on Sunday night, as Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin co-hosted the annual event that looked back at the year dominated by the all-time box office champ "Avatar."

"Avatar," the 3-D sci-fi sensation from James Cameron that broke box-office records, was favored to win big at Sunday's awards show, but Cameron was eclipsed by Kathryn Bigelow, who took home Oscar gold both for best picture and best director for "The Hurt Locker."

"The Hurt Locker" revolves around an explosive-ordnance disposal (EOD) team in Iraq, and has been racking up honors since it was first released.

Jeff Bridges was named best actor for his performance in "Crazy Heart." Bridges has been nominated several times throughout his career, including once for best supporting actor in "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" in 1974, which was partially filmed in Great Falls.

Sandra Bullock, often thought of primarily as a comedic actress, earned an Oscar for best actress for her performance in "The Blind Side."
