If you think you'll owe money to the IRS this tax season, help is available, and the agency is reminding tax payers about repayment options.

One option is an "offer in compromise" agreement that settles the debt for less than the amount owed. Taxpayers also have the option to pay with a credit card, although they will likely have to pay interest on the amount charged.

Local tax experts suggest filing electronically to help avoid late-payment penalties.

Tax advisor Gloria Creek noted, "There's the possibility it could get lost in the mail and if you do it electronically, you know what you're going to owe, you've filed your return...therefore you won't have the late filing penalty."

Creek says setting up an installment plan is as easy as attaching a letter with the return explaining the need; this option does have a small fee.

Creek says if you can't pay the whole amount, pay as much as you can upfront.

This year you can also borrow from a 401K to pay taxes, with little to no penalties.

Creek is also reminding tax payers who file for an extension that they don't get extra time to pay - just to file.

If you have an extension and are found to owe money, any late payments will be subject to fees and will accrue interest.
