Reed Point High School students got quite a shock when a history lesson about a gun misfired on Friday.

The gun actually went off in the middle of class and the bullet went through a wall. No one was hurt.

Superintendent Dwain Haggard says he was teaching a history lesson and was showing off his .50-caliber Hawkens, an antique replica muzzleloader, when the gun went off.

Superintendent Dwain HaggardHaggard tells us his initial reaction was one of "shock," adding, "And I still have no recollection of loading it, but it happened. It's not any fun to be the person that puts all the work in to make your school very safe and then you turn around and have to explain yourself how you do something that's so unsafe," Haggard said.

He tells Montana's News Station that he is a former law enforcement officer and was in the military, and he's proof that no matter how much you plan and practice safety, you can put people at risk.

Because the school board gave the superintendent permission to bring the gun onto school grounds, he faces no punishment.
