Montana students can get help with FAFSA

HELENA - Navigating the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as the FAFSA, can be a daunting task for students and parents.

But Montana's Student Assistance Foundation (SAF) is determined to help all Montana students get through it.

Students and parents can start applying on January 1 for the following 2014-2015 school year.

Most schools in Montana have a priority deadlines for filing, which is March 1.

However, it's February 15th for the University of Montana.

SAF program manager Rhonda Safford said that there is no reason all college-bound students shouldn't fill out the free application.

"Everybody should do the FAFSA. And it has really gotten quite a bit more simplified in the last few years. What we used to say took almost an hour is down to 25 minutes -ish. Unless you have something a bit more complicated; a little different situation. But most the time it really can be done in 30 minutes or less," explains Safford.

For step-by-step directions on how to complete the application, visit SAF's Smart About College website: here.
