A Missoula high school student is facing a negligent vehicular assault charge for driving under the influence, crashing his car, and causing life threatening injuries to his passenger.

Prosecutors say Daniel Newport and his 16-year-old passenger were drinking at various places around Missoula on Saturday.

The two ended up getting into a wreck around 5 a.m. on Rollercoaster Road.

The Montana Highway Patrol says Newport failed to make a left hand curve, went off the side of the road, hit the ditch, and his car flipped.

The 16-year-old passenger was thrown from the car; her condition is unknown at this time.

Troopers found alcohol containers and marijuana paraphernalia in the car.

Newport remains in jail on $25,000 bail.
