Helena man charged in armed robbery of hotel

John Burke of Helena has been charged with robbery and tampering with evidence after allegedly robbing the Jorgenson's Inn & Suites hotel at gunpoint on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Corey Livesay of the Helena Police Department said that at about 5:30 pm on Tuesday, a man walked into the hotel, brandished a gun, and robbed the hotel, escaping with an unknown amount of cash.

Authorities from HPD, Lewis & Clark Sheriff's Office, and the Montana Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

A short time later, a Sheriff' Leo Dutton and an MHP Trooper located a man matching the description of the suspect inside Lucky Lil's casino in Capital Hill Mall.

Burke, 52, was taken into custody at about 6:20 pm.

No injuries were reported.

Burke will be arraigned on Wednesday in Justice Court.

(6:01 pm) There is an unconfirmed report of an armed robbery at Jorgenson's Inn & Suites in Helena.

Scanner traffic reported the robbery, but it has not yet been confirmed by officials.

Reporter Marnee Banks is at the scene and says that the building is surrounded by law enforcement vehicles and officials from the Helena Police Department, the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Office, and the Montana Highway Patrol.

Jorgenson's is located at 1714 11th Avenue; avoid the area if possible until the situation has been resolved.
