After a flood of public comments, Helena City Commissioners say they will be amending the distracted driving ordinance.
Commissioner Dan Ellison says he will propose an amendment to allow hands free devices. The previous draft banned them.
Commissioner Matt Elsaesser and Mayor Jim Smith say they will support the amendment, which gives it enough votes to pass.
The distracted driving ordinance bans the use of handheld devices while driving.
Ellison says the response from the public has been incredible.
"I've had lots of comment around town: at the grocery store and restaurants, seeing people on the streets and without quantifying it in a scientific way what I'm hearing is that there is very strong support to regulate texting and handheld devices by drivers. There is also a solid level of support to allow for hands free use," said Ellison.
Ellison will offer his amendment at the Monday night meeting.
It is unknown whether or not Commissioners Dick Thweat and Paul Cartwright will support the changes.
