Rumors have long circulated about the Saint Charles Hall fourth-floor bathroom at Carroll College.

The Carroll website states: "Tales about unique people and events have floated through the halls passing from student to students, year after year - why is this door locked? what is the noise in that room? are there shadows in the windows? - all with a hint of intrigue."

In February 1962, a Carroll College student entered the bathroom late one night.

Ellen Baumler, an interpretive historian at the Montana Historical Society, said, "He came in and was brushing his teeth at the sink, blacked out, fell, hit his head, and was taken to the hospital a couple of week later...after two surgeries he died, but not of the injury...he actually died of pneumonia."

But it is the aftermath of the death that has left a lasting imprint on students who would later enter the bathroom.

Baumler recalled, "They would be standing at the wash basin washing their face, brushing their teeth, and they would look into the mirror and they would see this this young man come up behind them and his head was all bloody."

From there the tales began to grow: blood running from the faucet. A bloody stain that never leaves the floor. Heavy breathing coming from the bathroom.

Some people wonder: could the spirit of the Carroll student still haunt the bathroom nearly 50 years later?

Baumler said, "I do believe there is something to that incident tied to what may be going on, on that floor."

Scott Forthofer, assistant director for community living at the college, said, 'As for seeing a guy with his head gashed open or having sinks running with blood, I have not seen that yet."

The bathroom remains boarded up to this day, giving the location a somewhat eerie feel.

Despite the rumors, the bathroom now provides student excitement for haunted tours during Halloween.

Forthofer said, "The whole thing was to just kind of create an environment that would make it fun, almost like a mini haunted house in a way."

HauntedSchools.info: This college has a number of haunted places including a locked-up bathroom on the fourth floor of St. Charles Hall where a male student slipped and hit his head against the sink then later died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Red stains remain in the sink and the rumors of the haunting prompted the college officials to seal up the room.

ArchiveX: Many of the weird occurrences at this college have taken place in St. Charles Hall, where a blocked-off fourth-floor bathroom with mysterious bloodlike stains on the sink has generated all kinds of rumors. A tragedy did occur there about thirty years ago, but many students at Carroll College, as well as a number of faculty and staff, have never heard the truth about it.

Shadowlands.net: Legend has it that a priest committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor bathroom window of Saint Charles Hall, which is one of the dormitories on campus. Not long after the suicide, a varsity basketball player who lived on that floor slipped and cracked his head open in the same bathroom. Needless to say, he died from the injury. The school closed the bathroom after that. Years later, there were reports of blood flowing from the sink in that bathroom, even though the pipes were disconnected from the wall. The bathroom is still locked up to this day.
