Saturday's Big Band Broadcast in Great Falls showcased the talents of internationally acclaimed artists, dancers and musicians.

The event was held to start a music fund to support budding artists in the Treasure State.

As a rural state, Montana's youth don't have the same opportunities as many metropolitan areas to further their musical careers.

The Dorothy Monagin Music Endowment is hoping to change that and help kids with funding.

"This is a chance for them to get a scholarship and get out of the state, go to something different, meet people from all around the world and enhance their skills," said Linda Fuller who is Monagin's daughter.

Once established, the endowment will give scholarships for students in 7th through 12th grades to attend the International Music Camp, a cause many of the performers were anxious to be a part of.

"The arts is what gives meaning to life," professional drummer Ken French said. "There will come a day when I'm no longer here, and we have to raise the next generation that will continue the arts and music."

Receiving music instruction from experienced people isn't cheap, French noted. But believes it's necessary for kids to continue improving their skills.

He said endowments like the Dorothy Monagin are important to keep feeding the musical desires of our youth, who might otherwise not be given an opportunity to play alongside peers and professionals.

While the idea behind the foundation is important, it holds a special place in Fuller's heart to make sure it becomes successful.

"She passed away three years ago and we want to do something really great in her name for music in Montana, and across the country," Fuller said.
