Fort Benton has joined the growing list of Montana communities that want little part in the medical marijuana business until the state legislature has had a chance to take up the issue.

On Monday night, Fort Benton's City Council voted to pass a ban on medical marijuana businesses.

Mayor Rick Morris says language in the ordinance was left intentionally vague in case legal issues arise, but he says ultimately the measure will prohibit any new medical marijuana businesses and will restrict patients with valid green cards to using the cannabis only in their own home.

Morris said, "I think most of it was the council trying to address a problem, or a potential problem based on a lot of the stories or experiences other cities have had."

Mayor Morris says he's not aware of any existing medical marijuana businesses in the city, and added that neither proponents or opponents showed up to last night's meeting.

The ban passed with a vote of five to one and will remain in effect until July 11th, 2011.
