Wildfires have been cropping up across Montana in recent weeks, including the Lakeside fire near Helena just days ago, and the Bitterroot fire and Bob Marshall fires currently burning.

It's estimated that humans have caused 89% of the wildfires in Montana so far in 2010, according to Governor Brian Schweitzer's s office.

Today, Schweitzer met with officials from various fire agencies to receive a wildfire briefing. The Department of Natural Resources & Conservation reports that a wet, cool Spring has eased drought concerns, but also notes that the grass is waist-high and eventually will dry out, adding to the amount of fuel for wildfires.

To help Montanans prevent wildfires - and to be ready in the event of a fire - the Governor's Office of Community Service announced the second annual state-wide "Fire-Ready Montana" initiative, which promotes fire safety tips and family preparedness steps for all Montanans.

Schweitzer noted, "While this year has been a great year for moisture, it's always important to be prepared for wildfire season, especially with so many red trees posing an additional risk. We all can pitch in and take personal responsibility with simple steps to create ‘fire-wise' zones around our own homes; the time to act is now."

The Fire-Ready Montana initiative emphasizes prevention and preparation, including taking steps such as keeping your lawns mowed, keeping gutters free of debris, creating a family contact list, and putting together an emergency supply kit that includes water, food, and a battery-powered radio.
