LOCKWOOD - The Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office has revealed more details about an officer-involved shooting that happened late Saturday night, identifying the man who died as Edward Stump, 24.
Sheriff Mike Linder says Saturday night at about 10 o'clock, deputies were dispatched to a home on Canary Avenue for a report of suspicious activity.
The first deputy attempted to make contact with Stump at the home. The sheriff's office says Deputy Clay Hackbarth was then confronted inside the residence by Stump, who was armed with a handgun.
Sheriff Linder says Stump fired at Deputy Hackbarth and the deputy returned fire, striking Stump.
Strump was transported to a local hospital, where he died a short time later.
Deputy Hackbarth is currently on paid administrative leave. Hackbarth has been employed as a Yellowstone County Deputy for seven years.
Sheriff Linder says the investigation is ongoing and the Yellowstone County Attorney's Office will review the case.
A Coroner's inquest, which is required by law when a law enforcement officer is involved, will be scheduled by the County Attorney at a later date.
