Democratic Senator Jon Tester was in Havre to support a new project that aims to test bio-diesel fuel in locomotive engines.

BNSF Railway began using bio-fuel in one of its engines on July first.

Saturday the Senator attended a kick off ceremony for the project, which is the result of a partnership between MSU-Northern and BNSF.

Tester said if it's successful it could pave the way for similar efforts across the country.

Tester said, "Bottom line is that what we're doing is applying some of the work that's being done at the university and I think once we get that application and it works we'll be able to expand the process and the product throughout the country."

The fuel being used for the project is a 20-percent bio-diesel blend that's locally produced.

Tests will monitor emissions, consumption and performance among other areas.
